Oh, Canada!

In honour of Canada Day, I thought we could celebrate some of the many talented Canadian artists. Please join me in celebrating this strange, silly, and wonderful place with a little country music (because it's Friday, after all).

The First: Convoy by Paul Brandt

When I'm setting out on a long car ride (aka anything longer than, like, 20 minutes), there legitimately is no other song that I hope comes on the radio more than this one. Do I have to actually be in a convoy myself? Absolutely not! I just pretend that the other drivers are my squad and I give them knowing nods while singing the lyrics to this song. I may confuse the heck out of people, but goodness gracious does it make me feel cool.

The Second: Truck Got Stuck by Corb Lund

Boy, oh boy! I cannot express to you how fired up I was when I realized that this song had never before been featured. Past Karla's mistake is your great reward today. This poetry is still one of those songs that I can't help but laugh-sing along with.
You know what I appreciate about the production of this video ten years ago? That it portrays the narrative of this song so perfectly. Because who needs/wants to use their imagination on a holiday?
Agriculture Canada is definitely gonna be lookin' for us!

The Third and Final: If You Ask Me To by Mackenzie Porter

Get ready for one of the sweetest videos - it's a hard one to beat. If I think about it, actually, Mackenzie Porter is real good at making music videos that don't make my brain hurt. Maybe this lady from Medicine Hat, Alberta can teach a thing or two to whoever keeps directing those annoying Florida Georgia Line vids...

Enjoy the long weekend, everyone! If you have the pleasure to live in Canada, I hope you have a chance to get out and enjoy its beauty in one way or another. I plan to be inside as little as possible (because I only put up with Vancouver's rain in order to enjoy the killer summers here).

Thanks for listening!

My Top Ten Songs of Summer 2015

It's August 19th.
I'm just going to go ahead and call it now. I hope you're all okay with that because, if not, it's kind of too late since you're already reading this. Besides, there's a bonus in doing this now, instead of sometime in September: you can actually enjoy the songs while the season is still upon us.

So here are my top ten Songs of Summer 2015.

I will preface with saying that yes, I know not all these songs were brand new this summer. That's not really the point. The point is they're just the ones I've just been listening to a little bit too much lately. So, in no particular order, here you go:

1. Until I Met You by Sundy Best

We all know how these boys changed my life. Is that an exaggeration? Probably not. They gave me a newfound faith in music videos potentially not being awful forever and also gave us this really adorable song.

2. Break Up With Him by Old Dominion

Don't even pretend to be surprised. I've gushed over these guys three separate times. We all know my love for them and their humour and their talent and their faces.

3. Gonna by Blake Shelton

Still love it every time it comes on.

4. Rodeo by Mackenzie Porter

I think I just like how straightforward she is. I also still think he is adorable at the end with the laundry.

5. Take Your Time by Sam Hunt

My friend's almost three-year-old, Lily, doesn't like this song because "he spends too much time talking." Unfortunately, I disagree with lil' Lily. I'm a fan of the slow jam rap (at least that's what I call it..)

6. Loving You Easy by Zac Brown Band

It would take me forever to link all my past love for ZBB. Y'all get it. They're wonderful. They're talented. And every one of their future singles will probably end up being a CMF feature. Some things in life are just predictable like that.

7. Stay A Little Longer by the Brothers Osborne

So what I actually wanted to link here, and have been waiting (im)patiently for for months, is the extended version of this song. JRFM plays it once in a while and it's just such a treat. If you can find it on iTunes or are lucky enough to catch it on the radio, please enjoy.

8. My Mistake by Cam

Her voice is just so beautiful and the harmonies in this one still make my heart happy.

9. Don't It by Billy Currington

I think I just love the way he sings "as far as I can tell that finger ain't got no ring on it" and then goes on to talk about karaoke for kind of no reason at all.

10. Crash and Burn by Thomas Rhett

I'm into the video almost as much as I'm into the song. I like the part when he's walking next to his car rolling in neutral. I like the look on his face when he's recreating a little 1989 Say Anything and she's throwing his stuff out the window. I even like his jacket. The only thing that I don't really like is this girl's overacting. It's really the only upsetting part of an otherwise lovely music video.

Thanks for listening,

June 12, 2015

I had a brilliant idea last week.

Welcome to the weekend!

Have you ever been sitting at your desk, or perhaps bopping around at home, and thought to yourself, “man, I wish Karla was here to be my DJ and play all her great CMF choices for me right now.”

WELL, GUESS WHAT I'VE DONE!?

I can’t tell if you’ve guessed it already, so I will just tell you: I made a playlist on Spotify* with most of the songs that have been featured in CMF (and that I could remember/find) over the last few years for your listening pleasure. You’re welcome. I am rather new to Spotify, but I believe you can search "karcarr8" to find me and then you can then listen to the playlist. Spoiler alert: the playlist is called “CMF” and it’s the only one on my profile.

And so we move onto this week’s selections:

The First: So Much For Taking It Slow by Bobby Wills

I actually love the concept for this music video. I do, however, understand that unless you were too once a dancer or have ever watched a season of So You Think You Can Dance and therefore know everything there is about dance (…) you may not care too much for it. So instead I give you permission to just listen to the song instead of watching the vid, since that is what we’re here for, after all.

The Second: Rodeo by Mackenzie Porter

This song is quite catchy and as much as I have tried to not like it… I like it. Gah! Hopefully you enjoy it a little too, even though you may not want to. I also feel like the ladies of country music are horribly underrepresented in CMF, so this is an attempt to correct that. Today I’m choosing to highlight the three things that I enjoy about this music video because no one wants to hear from a pessimist on a Friday:
  1. The gentleman is quite attractive.
  2. She dances in confetti. I wouldn’t personally choose to do so in a music video… but it has now inspired an interest in me to dance around in confetti just on an average Tuesday or something. I hope that I am presented with that opportunity one day.
  3. I am so proud of him for figuring it out at the end there and paying for her laundry. Too cute.

The Third and Final: Georgia Clay by Josh Kelley

Just sit back, relax, and allow my good friend Josh to regale you with stories from the carefree days of his rebellious youth.

*Don't you worry your pretty little mind, you don't need to pay unless you want "Premium"

Thanks for listening!
