Just some great tunes, okay.

Well we may not have a long weekend to look forward to but we do at least have a weekend (and if you're in BC like me, sunshine!) and that's something to celebrate regardless. Wouldn't you agree?


The First: All About You by Josh Turner aka The Best Looking Guy in Country Music

Josh Turner has been sharing some stuff from his new album on the Youtube which means we can all enjoy it together! And it's good. This particular song is mostly just super catchy and, as you know, I think a catchy song is a pretty good start to the weekend.

Catchiness, exhibit a: the lyrics for this song may include "friggin' diggin' livin' in your world" which is almost as ridiculous/wonderful as Brett Eldredge's "flip flop flippin'" (which we already know I approve of).

I'll also take this opportunity to go ahead and share another *bonus* song that I really love off Josh's album, called Never Had A Reason. It's got a similar message, but is a bit slower, sweeter, and he doesn't say "friggin' diggin' livin'" in it, on the off change you weren't super into that.


The Second: Losing Sleep by Chris Young

I mean, we had one deep-voiced crooner, so might as well add his apprentice*, Chris Young, to the lineup too I suppose. I like the stop and start beat thing (that was obviously a technical term) that's going on during the verses of this song. It pulls me and gets me on the edge of my seat. Did the song just abruptly end? Will it stop again? Will I fall off this chair I'm precariously sitting on? Who knows!

*There is no evidence to suggest that Chris Young is actually Josh Turner's apprentice. I don't even know if they know each other. I mean, they probably do since the country music world is small enough to make that a very real possibility, but I just can't be absolutely positive about it - you know?

The Third and Final: Makin' Me Look Good Again by Drake White

Closing it out with some blues-y country to get you coasting into the weekend on some feel-good mellow vibes. (I'm so sorry I just used "feel-good" and "mellow" and "vibes" all at once. It won't happen ever again, you have my word. Please don't judge this song off my lack of sophisticated vocabulary. The song's still good, I promise). 

The end of May brings with it a lot of birthdays for friends and family which means I get to celebrate some really great people this weekend. Bring on the birthday cake!

No one, I just needed some sort of horrible transition to remind you of how great the start of this song is because it's still one of my all time favourites.

Never mind. Let's just move on to this week's songs, shall we?

The First: Rather Make A Living by Steve Moakler

I heard about Steve Moakler yesterday while listening to the radio (they were talking about his current single, Suitcase) and I was intrigued enough to do some digging. I think he's kind of reinvented himself in recent years and changed up his sound to be more country. Surprise, surprise: he does it well. I like several of his songs, as it turns out, but this one specifically caught my ear. Listen to my friend Steve and don't let this be you.


The Second: Grinnin' by Drake White

This song was a recommendation from a fellow country music appreciator, Jordan. You should know that he is arguably more of a country music fan than I am... so you just know that this is a good pick. I think my favourite part of this song is when he scats and just kinda takes the song where he wants it to go in the moment. Like, 4:25 onwards is just perfection. Basically what I'm saying is that it's a great acoustic performance and has anyone made progress on that whole time machine thing because I'd love to go back and be in that audience. I'd also use it to stock up on more adorable stationary and throw pillows (you can never have too many) while Target Canada still existed, but I suppose that's neither here nor there.


The Third and Final: Cover Me Up by Jason Isbell

I don't think I've shared any Jason Isbell on here yet, so it must be about time. Like all these guys, he's got lots of great songs I could feature but I think this one effectively captures the gravellyness (...it's a word) of his voice and the way he sings emphasis on certain words really well.

Car rides and new music.

So, I spent way too much time in my car last weekend, which I usually hate. The one redeeming thing about it was that the radio DJ's song selection was on point and I actually heard a few new ones I didn't know about. So this week I'm sharing the product of my driving time with all of you.

My pain is your gain.


The First: Livin' The Dream by Drake White

Umm, who is Drake White and where has he been hiding? Great question. You may remember him from It Feels Good last year, a song that never fails to leave me wanting to jump on a Mississippi-bound plane and enjoy a crawfish boil.


The Second: Huntin', Fishin', Lovin' Everyday by Luke Bryan

Soooo I'm pretty sure that (beyond his cameo appearance in my Christmas music top ten last year) this is Luke's first CMF feature. Congratulations, Luke! Since he's one of the fathers of "Bro Country" I rarely hear a new Luke Bryan song and think "Yesss. I love this." It's just not really my jam. But right from the beginning of this song, I knew it was going to be different and that I loved it. In fact, I exclaimed "WHAT?! What is this?! Is this LUKE?!" when it first came on. I was alone in my car.

Totally unrelated thing to know about me: I am very animated and loud when I'm alone in my car. Sometimes other drivers give me weird looks. But the judgement of people I will likely never again cross paths with is a really small price to pay.


The Third and Final: Found by Dan Davidson

I love this. Love. It. You know why? You can clap along to it which, if you've been around for any amount of time, you know is a marker of a great song in my books.


I'm feeling generous this week and I also somehow went from no new music a few weeks ago to too many songs to share this week, so here is some country a capella for your sunny Friday: Ring of Fire covered by Home Free.
