Rollin', tumblin', and then leaving immediately.

Hello CMF Friends!

This week’s Country Music Friday will feature songs with titles that include actions which may result after you trip. Something that kind of klutzy people like me do more often than I care to admit. How fun!

The First: Slow Rollin’  by Dallas Smith

He really does need to give it a rest.

The Second: Tumblin’ Tears by One More Girl

Thoughts: That is a significant amount of black mascara that lady is wearing. How does their hair stay so perfectly manicured if they’re driving fast on the highway with the top down (Answer: magic)? Do you think the Zac G. impersonator was planned or they just found him and decided to include him? Let me know if any of you have the answers.

The Third and Final: I Wanna Go Home by Sundy Best

Because after I embarrass myself in public by tripping over my own feet, I typically want to go home and hide for a bit.

Thanks for listening!

a deer(e) and a cougar walk into a bar...

Hello and welcome. Lovely to have you here, as always. I hope the last seven days have been pleasant for you all.

We’ve got a little bit of a motley crew selection this week, but that’s just what happens sometimes so you’ll just have to trust that it will all be alright.

The First: John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16 by Keith Urban

There was NO.WAY. I could avoid including this song today. It has been following me all week and I’m not complaining. This song in a strange way reminds me of Kenny Chesney’s American Kids and I can’t quite put my finger on why. If you figure it out, please let me know.
Since I know you’re wondering, I knew the latter two Johns but will admit that when I was explaining this song to my father* this past weekend, I had to google who John Cougar was. I know now: It’s John Mellencamp. Just in case you were pretending to know but didn’t. Now when someone comes up to you tomorrow and asks you who all the Johns are that you’re singing about – because good luck getting this song out of your head – you’ll be able to tell them and not look foolish.
Finally, I feel it is my duty to tell you that this song sounds best when played at a high volume. In a car. With them windows rolled down.

The Second: Oh, Tonight by Josh Abbott Band feat. Kacey Musgraves

A favourite of mine from many summers ago, this song found its way back into my brain this week, which has obviously resulted in me continuously hitting repeat every morning as I’m getting ready for work. Please enjoy it.

The Third and Final: Nowhere Fast by Old Dominion

Can’t stop, won’t stop. As you’ve undoubtedly noticed, these boys are very quickly becoming serious favourites of mine. It cannot be helped. I did struggle to find a recorded version of this song on the youtube, which is a real shame (although you can find it at other sources like iTunes and Spotify) but as I am also a big fan of live music, I’m really not that heartbroken about it. Hope you enjoy it!

*FATHERS DAY SHOUT OUT! I love you, Dad <3
Here’s a song dedicated to you by another father who, though also a talented musician with as many kids, cannot possibly be anywhere near as hilarious as you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbIJeMniHKU

I had a brilliant idea last week.

Welcome to the weekend!

Have you ever been sitting at your desk, or perhaps bopping around at home, and thought to yourself, “man, I wish Karla was here to be my DJ and play all her great CMF choices for me right now.”

WELL, GUESS WHAT I'VE DONE!?

I can’t tell if you’ve guessed it already, so I will just tell you: I made a playlist on Spotify* with most of the songs that have been featured in CMF (and that I could remember/find) over the last few years for your listening pleasure. You’re welcome. I am rather new to Spotify, but I believe you can search "karcarr8" to find me and then you can then listen to the playlist. Spoiler alert: the playlist is called “CMF” and it’s the only one on my profile.

And so we move onto this week’s selections:

The First: So Much For Taking It Slow by Bobby Wills

I actually love the concept for this music video. I do, however, understand that unless you were too once a dancer or have ever watched a season of So You Think You Can Dance and therefore know everything there is about dance (…) you may not care too much for it. So instead I give you permission to just listen to the song instead of watching the vid, since that is what we’re here for, after all.

The Second: Rodeo by Mackenzie Porter

This song is quite catchy and as much as I have tried to not like it… I like it. Gah! Hopefully you enjoy it a little too, even though you may not want to. I also feel like the ladies of country music are horribly underrepresented in CMF, so this is an attempt to correct that. Today I’m choosing to highlight the three things that I enjoy about this music video because no one wants to hear from a pessimist on a Friday:
  1. The gentleman is quite attractive.
  2. She dances in confetti. I wouldn’t personally choose to do so in a music video… but it has now inspired an interest in me to dance around in confetti just on an average Tuesday or something. I hope that I am presented with that opportunity one day.
  3. I am so proud of him for figuring it out at the end there and paying for her laundry. Too cute.

The Third and Final: Georgia Clay by Josh Kelley

Just sit back, relax, and allow my good friend Josh to regale you with stories from the carefree days of his rebellious youth.

*Don't you worry your pretty little mind, you don't need to pay unless you want "Premium"

Thanks for listening!

Summer Playlist

It’s Friday! Celebrate!!

Apparently the theme for this week is “songs that will be played on repeat this summer” because this selection is just begging for you to do that.

The First: Cheap Seats by Dallas Smith

Dear Dallas Smith,
COULD YOU PLEASE STOP?! It is unreasonable for you to consistently produce number one singles. It’s really not fair to any of the other people in your industry. Have you never heard the term “sharing is caring”? Clearly you have not since you continue to hog all the talent and not give anyone else a chance. Is it that you are physically incapable of writing bad songs? I suggest you challenge yourself a little and just try it. Just to see if you can do something different for a change, because this has gotten ridiculous.
(PS This wonderful human is from Langley. PPS Let’s not forget this gem from CMFs past: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02cfyLXdHKM)

The Second: Raised On It by Sam Hunt

An oldie* but a goodie that I’m just realizing has never been featured, so here you go! Favourite line: “Breakin’ hearts and curfews” Probably because I haven’t done either of those things. Dreams, my friends. Big dreams.

The Third and Final: Smack Dab by Chasin’ Crazy

Let’s just get the video rant out of the way: This lyric video would be fine if it weren’t for the weird silhouette overlay they’ve chosen to “artistically” add in at various points throughout the song. Sigh. Why do people do these things? I wish I knew.
Moving on, these humans will be playing at Sunfest this summer (I WISH I were going) and I think they would be fun to watch live. Who knew you were allowed to have all five band members sing the majority of a song together and not need to incorporate choreographed group dancing? I did not. But I like it. Here’s another part of this song I like (that I just presume my friend David will not): “Hella high gurl, hella hella high gurl” at 1:15-1:18. Purely for the ridiculousness factor. And that it’s really fun to sing along with. Anywho, best of luck getting this song out of your head.

*Age is relative here since we’re calling a song that came out two years ago “old”.

Thanks for listening!
